Place Value Drill Worksheets

Place value is the idea that makes the rest of arithmetic work: that a digit means something different depending on where it sits. These sheets build it in order — teen numbers as ten and some ones in kindergarten, tens and ones to 99 in grade 1, hundreds and expanded form in grade 2, rounding to tens and hundreds in grade 3, multi-digit numbers to the hundred thousands in grade 4, and decimal place value with powers of ten in grade 5.

Because place-value questions come in many shapes — naming a digit, giving its value, writing expanded form, comparing, rounding, ten more and ten less — the mixed-review sheets here are unusually varied, and the missing-number sheets blank a term of an expanded form or a power of ten rather than an operand.

Choose a grade

Place value on this site runs from Kindergarten to grade 5: 29 worksheets across six grades and five formats (drill, timed drill, missing number, mixed review, and word problems), each in three versions, for 2,616 problems in all with every answer keyed. Three of the sheets were first published on MathSheetLab and are kept here as Set A of their cell, with Sets B and C derived from them.

Grade by grade: Kindergarten works on teen numbers as ten and some ones, counting on, and one more and one less; Grade 1 works on tens and ones to 99, ten more and ten less, and comparing two-digit numbers; Grade 2 works on hundreds, tens and ones, expanded form to 999, and 10 or 100 more and less; Grade 3 works on rounding to the nearest ten and hundred, and four-digit expanded form; Grade 4 works on rounding multi-digit numbers to any place and the value of each digit to the hundred thousands; Grade 5 works on decimal place value to thousandths, powers of ten, and rounding decimals.

The six formats

  • Drill. Straight practice, 20-40 problems. Repeating one question shape — which digit, what value, round to which place — is how the vocabulary of place value becomes automatic.
  • Timed Drill. Fact fluency, 50-100 problems, timer box on sheet. Place-value questions answered quickly are the sign that the base-ten structure is understood rather than worked out.
  • Missing Number. Solve for the blank in any position. A blank term in an expanded form or a missing power of ten asks the student to reason about structure, not recall a fact.
  • Mixed Review. Assorted problem shapes from the operation. Place value has more question shapes than any other topic, and this format is where they meet.
  • Word Problems. Story problems in real-world contexts. Populations, prices and measurements put large and decimal numbers in context, which is where rounding actually matters.
