Integers Drill Worksheets

Integers are where the intuition that adding makes things bigger finally has to be given up. Grade 6 introduces negative numbers through comparison, ordering, opposites and absolute value; grade 7 adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides them; grade 8 uses them as exponents, in scientific notation and in order-of-operations expressions.

Negative operands on these sheets are written in parentheses the way textbooks print them — 7 + (-3), -4 × (-6) — so the sign of a number and the operation between numbers stay visually separate. The missing-number sheets blank an addend or a factor, which is where sign rules are really tested.

Choose a grade

Integers on this site runs from Grade 6 to grade 8: 15 worksheets across three grades and five formats (drill, timed drill, missing number, mixed review, and word problems), each in three versions, for 1,164 problems in all with every answer keyed. Six of the sheets were first published on MathSheetLab and are kept here as Set A of their cell, with Sets B and C derived from them.

The six formats

  • Drill. Straight practice, 20-40 problems. A page of one signed operation is where the sign rule stops being recited and starts being applied.
  • Timed Drill. Fact fluency, 50-100 problems, timer box on sheet. Signed facts under time pressure show whether the rules are known or being re-derived each time.
  • Missing Number. Solve for the blank in any position. A missing addend or factor with a sign is the sharpest test of whether the rules are understood rather than pattern-matched.
  • Mixed Review. Assorted problem shapes from the operation. Mixing the four operations on signed numbers forces the student to pick the right sign rule for each problem.
  • Word Problems. Story problems in real-world contexts. Temperatures, depths, floors and balances give negative numbers a meaning that makes the direction of an answer checkable.
