What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 4 missing number sheet holds 24 place value problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. The blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 995,517. Two problems from the middle of the page — "995,517 = 900,000 + 90,000 + 5,000 + 500 + ___ + 7" and "683,664 = ___ + 80,000 + 3,000 + 600 + 60 + 4" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 4.NBT.2 — Number & Operations in Base Ten, grade 4.

Skills practised

The grade 4 place value sequence covers rounding multi-digit numbers to any place and the value of each digit to the hundred thousands; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is missing terms in expanded form. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Twenty different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "995,517 = 900,000 + 90,000 + 5,000 + 500 + ___ + 7" is one of them. A blank term in an expanded form or a missing power of ten asks the student to reason about structure, not recall a fact.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "947,236 = 900,000 + 40,000 + 7,000 + ___ + 30 + 6", Set B's is "251,301 = ___ + 50,000 + 1,000 + 300 + 1".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 24 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own place value error teaches more than seeing it circled. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 24 problems needs a score attached to be useful.

One mistake to watch for

Rounding goes the wrong way when the digit is 5, or rounds the wrong digit. On this grade 4 missing number, problem 17 ("683,664 = ___ + 80,000 + 3,000 + 600 + 60 + 4") is the kind of item where it shows.

The rule is being applied to the digit being rounded instead of the one to its right.

Underline the place being rounded to and circle the digit to its right; only the circled digit decides.
