Within that, each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and the numbers run as high as 941,148. Skills practised
At grade 4, place value is about rounding multi-digit numbers to any place and the value of each digit to the hundred thousands, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing. Nine different answers appear across the ten problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "Ivan reads the population sign: 275,853. What is the value…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Populations, prices and measurements put large and decimal numbers in context, which is where rounding actually matters.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A stadium sold 941,148 tickets last season. About how many…", Set B's is "A stadium sold 216,915 tickets last season. About how many…".
How to use this worksheet
Give this word problems uninterrupted. At grade 4, place value is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and ten problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Ask the student to re-work one missed place value problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Rounding goes the wrong way when the digit is 5, or rounds the wrong digit. On this grade 4 word problems, problem 7 ("Elena reads the population sign: 862,233. What is the value…") is the kind of item where it shows.
The rule is being applied to the digit being rounded instead of the one to its right.
Underline the place being rounded to and circle the digit to its right; only the circled digit decides.
