What this worksheet covers
This is a 8-problem word problems for grade 2 place value, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Problems 3 and 6, for instance, are "Noah writes 202 in expanded form. What does Noah write?" and "Quinn's number has 3 hundreds, 8 tens and 5 ones. What is…".
Skills practised
Grade 2 place value means hundreds, tens and ones, expanded form to 999, and 10 or 100 more and less. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
The 8 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 3, "Noah writes 202 in expanded form. What does Noah write?" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Populations, prices and measurements put large and decimal numbers in context, which is where rounding actually matters.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 5 is "Tessa's number has 3 hundreds, 0 tens and 1 ones. What is…", Set B's is "A school has 391 students. Round that number to the nearest…".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this place value word problems. At grade 2 the useful information is not the score but which of the eight problems drew a pause. Date the word problems before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the place value stuck.
One mistake to watch for
The value of a digit is given as the digit itself: the 4 in 4,371 is "4". Watch problem 6 of this word problems — "Quinn's number has 3 hundreds, 8 tens and 5 ones. What is…" — for this one.
The digit is being read as a symbol rather than as a count of a unit.
Ask "four what?" every time and have the student answer with the unit — four thousands — before writing the number.
