Grade 8 Math Worksheets

Grade 8 consolidates algebra: multi-step linear equations with variables on both sides, integer exponents and their rules, scientific notation, proportional relationships as slope, and percent change and simple interest as multi-step problems.

Drill still matters at this level, but it is drill in structure rather than facts. A student who solves thirty two-step equations without error is not learning new mathematics; they are making the inverse-operation steps automatic so that the next idea has somewhere to sit.

Topics taught in grade 8

Grade 8 on this site: four topics — percents, integers, ratios and proportions, and expressions and equations — in 20 worksheets, each in three versions, for 1,464 problems with keys.

Percents: percent change, simple interest, and multi-step percent problems. Integers: integer exponents, the product, quotient and power rules, negative exponents and scientific notation. Ratios & Proportions: proportional relationships and slope, solving proportions, similar figures and scale factors. Expressions & Equations: multi-step linear equations, operations in scientific notation and integer exponent rules.

To see the level at a glance: the percents drill has 30 problems (problem 11: "A value changes from 40 to 20. What is the percent decrease?"), the integers drill has 22 problems (problem 8: "10³ ÷ 10⁵"), the ratios and proportions drill has 30 problems (problem 11: "If y is proportional to x and y = 12 when x = 6, what is y…"), and the expressions and equations drill has 16 problems (problem 6: "(5.6 x 10^5) + (2.2 x 10^4)").
