What this worksheet covers

60 place value problems fill this timed drill page; problem 21 asks "Which digit is in the tens place of 10?", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, the numbers run as high as 102. Further down, problem 41 asks "24 ___ 11". The sheet sits inside Common Core 1.NBT.5, in the grade 1 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Skills practised

At grade 1, place value is about tens and ones to 99, ten more and ten less, and comparing two-digit numbers, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise ten more and ten less, comparing two-digit numbers, and naming the tens and ones digit. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 29 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

With 60 short problems such as problem 21, "Which digit is in the tens place of 10?" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Place-value questions answered quickly are the sign that the base-ten structure is understood rather than worked out.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 31 is "10 more than 58", Set B's is "10 more than 88".

How to use this worksheet

Sit alongside for this place value timed drill. At grade 1 the useful information is not the score but which of the 60 problems drew a pause. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 60 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
