What this worksheet covers
Ten story problems fill this word problems page; problem 4 asks "A runner finished in 69.921 seconds. Round the time to the…", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and operands run to three decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Further down, problem 7 asks "A runner finished in 86.629 seconds. Round the time to the…".
Skills practised
At grade 5, place value is about decimal place value to thousandths, powers of ten, and rounding decimals, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing and keep the decimal points aligned.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "A runner finished in 69.921 seconds. Round the time to the…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Populations, prices and measurements put large and decimal numbers in context, which is where rounding actually matters.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A runner finished in 70.303 seconds. Round the time to the…", Set B's is "A runner finished in 1.743 seconds. Round the time to the…".
How to use this worksheet
Give this word problems uninterrupted. At grade 5, place value is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and ten problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Keep the key face down until all ten problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
The value of a digit is given as the digit itself: the 4 in 4,371 is "4". Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "A runner finished in 86.629 seconds. Round the time to the…" — for this one.
The digit is being read as a symbol rather than as a count of a unit.
Ask "four what?" every time and have the student answer with the unit — four thousands — before writing the number.
