What this worksheet covers
This is a 20-problem missing number for kindergarten place value, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 19. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "12 = 10 + ___" and "1 ten and ___ ones = 17". The skill maps to Common Core K.NBT.1.
Skills practised
The kindergarten place value sequence covers teen numbers as ten and some ones, counting on, and one more and one less; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is teen numbers as ten and some ones, counting tens and ones to 20, and one more and one less. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Fourteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 20 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 7, "12 = 10 + ___" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A blank term in an expanded form or a missing power of ten asks the student to reason about structure, not recall a fact.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 11 is "1 ten and ___ ones = 11", Set B's is "1 ten and ___ ones = 17".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this place value missing number. At kindergarten the useful information is not the score but which of the twenty problems drew a pause. Ask the student to re-work one missed place value problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
The value of a digit is given as the digit itself: the 4 in 4,371 is "4". Problem 14 on this kindergarten missing number page, "1 ten and ___ ones = 17", is where to look for it.
The digit is being read as a symbol rather than as a count of a unit.
Ask "four what?" every time and have the student answer with the unit — four thousands — before writing the number.
