What this worksheet covers

This is a 60-problem timed drill for grade 2 place value, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The numbers run as high as 996. Problems 21 and 41, for instance, are "10 less than 287" and "169 ___ 169". Common Core 2.NBT.1 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 2 place value means hundreds, tens and ones, expanded form to 999, and 10 or 100 more and less. Specifically, the problems practise hundreds, tens and ones, comparing three-digit numbers, and 10 or 100 more and less. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 30 different answers appear across the 60 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 60; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 21, "10 less than 287" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Place-value questions answered quickly are the sign that the base-ten structure is understood rather than worked out.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 31 is "Which digit is in the tens place of 420?", Set B's is "Which digit is in the ones place of 663?".

How to use this worksheet

Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this timed drill in half, do one part of the 60 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 60 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
