Expressions & Equations Drill Worksheets

Expressions and equations are the start of algebra proper. Grade 6 evaluates expressions, works with whole-number exponents and solves one-step equations; grade 7 solves two-step equations, applies the distributive property, combines like terms and solves one-step inequalities; grade 8 solves multi-step linear equations with variables on both sides and computes with scientific notation.

Every equation on these sheets has an integer solution, and the answer key writes it as "x = " rather than a bare number, so the form of an algebraic answer is modelled alongside the value. Word problems ask the student to write the equation as well as solve it.

Expressions and equations on this site runs from Grade 6 to grade 8: 15 worksheets across three grades and five formats (drill, timed drill, missing number, mixed review, and word problems), each in three versions, for 1,248 problems in all with every answer keyed. Seven of the sheets were first published on MathSheetLab and are kept here as Set A of their cell, with Sets B and C derived from them.

The six formats

  • Drill. Straight practice, 20-40 problems. Solving the same shape of equation thirty times is how the inverse-operation steps stop being deliberate.
  • Timed Drill. Fact fluency, 50-100 problems, timer box on sheet. Evaluating expressions and one-step equations quickly is the fluency multi-step algebra rests on.
  • Missing Number. Solve for the blank in any position. A missing coefficient or constant asks the student to reason about the structure of the expression, which is the algebraic habit itself.
  • Mixed Review. Assorted problem shapes from the operation. Evaluating, simplifying and solving on one page keep the student reading the instruction rather than assuming one.
  • Word Problems. Story problems in real-world contexts. Translating a sentence into an equation is the skill the drill sheets cannot practise, and the one that matters most.
