What this worksheet covers

There are 24 place value problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 94. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "9 tens and ___ ones = 94" and "7 tens and ___ ones = 74". It is written against Common Core 1.NBT.2 — Number & Operations in Base Ten, grade 1.

Skills practised

Grade 1 place value means tens and ones to 99, ten more and ten less, and comparing two-digit numbers. Specifically, the problems practise tens and ones to 99 and ten more and ten less. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Twenty different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "9 tens and ___ ones = 94" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A blank term in an expanded form or a missing power of ten asks the student to reason about structure, not recall a fact.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "4 tens and ___ ones = 49", Set B's is "9 tens and ___ ones = 99".

How to use this worksheet

Sit alongside for this place value missing number. At grade 1 the useful information is not the score but which of the 24 problems drew a pause. Mark the 24 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

Ten more than 47 is found by counting on by ones. On this grade 1 missing number, problem 17 ("7 tens and ___ ones = 74") is the kind of item where it shows.

The tens digit has not yet been seen as a thing that can be changed on its own.

Use a hundreds chart and trace the move straight down one row; the ones digit stays put and the student can see it.
