Working the page asks a student to recall the place value facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. 21 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "Round 197 to the nearest ten." shows the level it holds. Repeating one question shape — which digit, what value, round to which place — is how the vocabulary of place value becomes automatic.

How to use this worksheet

By grade 3 a student should take all 30 place value problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more place value practice piles on. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 30 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
