What this worksheet covers

This is a 24-problem missing number for grade 3 place value, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 9,801. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "7,574 = 7,000 + 500 + 70 + ___" and "2,124 = ___ + 100 + 20 + 4". The sheet sits inside Common Core 2.NBT.3, in the grade 2 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Skills practised

At grade 3, place value is about rounding to the nearest ten and hundred, and four-digit expanded form, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skill on the page: missing terms in expanded form. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Eighteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "7,574 = 7,000 + 500 + 70 + ___" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A blank term in an expanded form or a missing power of ten asks the student to reason about structure, not recall a fact.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "9,801 = 9,000 + ___ + 1", Set B's is "8,769 = 8,000 + 700 + 60 + ___".

How to use this worksheet

By grade 3 a student should take all 24 place value problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more place value practice piles on. Ask the student to re-work one missed place value problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.

One mistake to watch for

Expanded form drops the zeros: 4,037 becomes 4,000 + 3 + 7. On this grade 3 missing number, problem 17 ("2,124 = ___ + 100 + 20 + 4") is the kind of item where it shows.

The empty hundreds place is invisible once the number is taken apart.

Write the places above the digits before expanding, so the hundreds column has a name even when it holds nothing.
