At kindergarten, place value is about teen numbers as ten and some ones, counting on, and one more and one less, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise teen numbers as ten and some ones and counting tens and ones to 20. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Nineteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
This drill runs 20 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 7, "16 = 10 + ___" shows the level it holds. Repeating one question shape — which digit, what value, round to which place — is how the vocabulary of place value becomes automatic.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 11 is "14 = 10 + ___", Set B's is "17 = 10 + ___".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this place value drill. At kindergarten the useful information is not the score but which of the twenty problems drew a pause. Ask the student to re-work one missed place value problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Ten more than 47 is found by counting on by ones. Watch problem 14 of this drill — "16 = ___ tens and ___ ones" — for this one.
The tens digit has not yet been seen as a thing that can be changed on its own.
Use a hundreds chart and trace the move straight down one row; the ones digit stays put and the student can see it.
