At grade 3, place value is about rounding to the nearest ten and hundred, and four-digit expanded form, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "A school has 941 students. Round that number to the nearest…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Populations, prices and measurements put large and decimal numbers in context, which is where rounding actually matters.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "Ben writes 588 in expanded form. What does Ben write?", Set B's is "Diego writes 787 in expanded form. What does Diego write?".
How to use this worksheet
Work the ten problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own place value error teaches more than seeing it circled. Ask the student to re-work one missed place value problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Expanded form drops the zeros: 4,037 becomes 4,000 + 3 + 7. Problem 7 on this grade 3 word problems page, "Leo's number has 1 hundreds, 8 tens and 7 ones. What is the…", is where to look for it.
The empty hundreds place is invisible once the number is taken apart.
Write the places above the digits before expanding, so the hundreds column has a name even when it holds nothing.
