About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "A school has 941 students. Round that number to the nearest…" is one of them. Populations, prices and measurements put large and decimal numbers in context, which is where rounding actually matters.

How to use this worksheet
Work the ten problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own place value error teaches more than seeing it circled. Ask the student to re-work one missed place value problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Rounding goes the wrong way when the digit is 5, or rounds the wrong digit. Problem 8 on this grade 3 word problems page, "A school has 635 students. Round that number to the nearest…", is where to look for it.
The rule is being applied to the digit being rounded instead of the one to its right.
Underline the place being rounded to and circle the digit to its right; only the circled digit decides.
