What this worksheet covers
There are 30 place value problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer and operands run to three decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "610 ÷ 10^1" and "77 × 10^1". The sheet sits inside Common Core 5.NBT.3, in the grade 5 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.
Skills practised
At grade 5, place value is about decimal place value to thousandths, powers of ten, and rounding decimals, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is decimal place value to thousandths, multiplying and dividing by powers of ten, and rounding decimals. To finish it, a student has to keep the decimal points aligned, apply the order of operations to powers, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 25 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the mixed review format
Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover five different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "610 ÷ 10^1" sits next to problems of a different kind. Place value has more question shapes than any other topic, and this format is where they meet.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "28 × 10^2", Set B's is "Write 37.11 in expanded form.".
How to use this worksheet
Give this mixed review uninterrupted. At grade 5, place value is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 30 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. If more than a third of the 30 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in place value rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Expanded form drops the zeros: 4,037 becomes 4,000 + 3 + 7. On this grade 5 mixed review, problem 21 ("77 × 10^1") is the kind of item where it shows.
The empty hundreds place is invisible once the number is taken apart.
Write the places above the digits before expanding, so the hundreds column has a name even when it holds nothing.
