About the drill format

This drill runs 20 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 7, "10 more than 14" shows the level it holds. Repeating one question shape — which digit, what value, round to which place — is how the vocabulary of place value becomes automatic.

How to use this worksheet

Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 1. Fold this drill in half, do one part of the twenty problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Date the drill before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the place value stuck.

One mistake to watch for

The value of a digit is given as the digit itself: the 4 in 4,371 is "4". On this grade 1 drill, problem 14 ("10 less than 64") is the kind of item where it shows.

The digit is being read as a symbol rather than as a count of a unit.

Ask "four what?" every time and have the student answer with the unit — four thousands — before writing the number.
