This is a 30-problem mixed review for grade 3 place value, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The numbers run as high as 9,921. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "Round 930 to the nearest hundred." and "Round 836 to the nearest hundred.". The sheet sits inside Common Core 3.NBT.1, in the grade 3 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

At grade 3, place value is about rounding to the nearest ten and hundred, and four-digit expanded form, and this sheet takes one slice of that. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 24 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

Place value has more question shapes than any other topic, and this format is where they meet.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "Round 918 to the nearest hundred.", Set B's is "What is the value of the 1 in 1,595?".
How to use this worksheet
Work the 30 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own place value error teaches more than seeing it circled. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 30 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
One mistake to watch for
The value of a digit is given as the digit itself: the 4 in 4,371 is "4". Problem 21 on this grade 3 mixed review page, "Round 836 to the nearest hundred.", is where to look for it.
The digit is being read as a symbol rather than as a count of a unit.
Ask "four what?" every time and have the student answer with the unit — four thousands — before writing the number.
