Grade 4 place value means rounding multi-digit numbers to any place and the value of each digit to the hundred thousands. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 40 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "What is the value of the 8 in 989,800?" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Place-value questions answered quickly are the sign that the base-ten structure is understood rather than worked out.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "What is the value of the 9 in 799,310?", Set B's is "What is the value of the 7 in 528,746?".
How to use this worksheet
Work the 72 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own place value error teaches more than seeing it circled. Ask the student to re-work one missed place value problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
