What this worksheet covers

24 place value problems fill this missing number page; problem 9 asks "___ is 100 less than 229", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 971. Further down, problem 17 asks "___ is 100 less than 274". The sheet sits inside Common Core 2.NBT.8, in the grade 2 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Skills practised

The grade 2 place value sequence covers hundreds, tens and ones, expanded form to 999, and 10 or 100 more and less; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise 10 or 100 more and less and writing a number from expanded form. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 21 different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "___ is 100 less than 229" is one of them. A blank term in an expanded form or a missing power of ten asks the student to reason about structure, not recall a fact.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "___ is 10 less than 214", Set B's is "___ is 100 less than 559".

How to use this worksheet

Grade 2 attention runs short, so split these 24 place value problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Mark the 24 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

The value of a digit is given as the digit itself: the 4 in 4,371 is "4". Problem 17 on this grade 2 missing number page, "___ is 100 less than 274", is where to look for it.

The digit is being read as a symbol rather than as a count of a unit.

Ask "four what?" every time and have the student answer with the unit — four thousands — before writing the number.
