What this worksheet covers

24 place value problems fill this mixed review page; problem 9 asks "Write 710 in expanded form.", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 980. Further down, problem 17 asks "Which digit is in the hundreds place of 722?". Common Core 2.NBT.3 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

At grade 2, place value is about hundreds, tens and ones, expanded form to 999, and 10 or 100 more and less, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: expanded form to 999, hundreds, tens and ones, and comparing three-digit numbers. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Nineteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

The 24 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 9, "Write 710 in expanded form." is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Place value has more question shapes than any other topic, and this format is where they meet.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "980 ___ 605", Set B's is "Which digit is in the tens place of 217?".

How to use this worksheet

Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this mixed review in half, do one part of the 24 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in place value rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Expanded form drops the zeros: 4,037 becomes 4,000 + 3 + 7. Problem 17 on this grade 2 mixed review page, "Which digit is in the hundreds place of 722?", is where to look for it.

The empty hundreds place is invisible once the number is taken apart.

Write the places above the digits before expanding, so the hundreds column has a name even when it holds nothing.
