What this worksheet covers
72 place value problems fill this timed drill page; problem 25 asks "Which digit is in the tenths place of 71.391?", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and operands run to three decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Further down, problem 49 asks "Which digit is in the hundredths place of 72.416?". Common Core 5.NBT.3 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 5 place value means decimal place value to thousandths, powers of ten, and rounding decimals. Specifically, the problems practise decimal place value to thousandths, rounding decimals, and comparing decimals to hundredths. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 34 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
With 72 short problems such as problem 25, "Which digit is in the tenths place of 71.391?" and a timer box, this page measures recall rather than method — write the time down, and aim to beat it on Set B. Place-value questions answered quickly are the sign that the base-ten structure is understood rather than worked out.

How to use this worksheet
By grade 5 a student should take all 72 place value problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more place value practice piles on. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 72 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
