What this worksheet covers

There are 24 place value problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, the numbers run as high as 98. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "38 ___ 95" and "43 ___ 39". The sheet sits inside Common Core 1.NBT.2, in the grade 1 Number & Operations in Base Ten strand.

Skills practised

At grade 1, place value is about tens and ones to 99, ten more and ten less, and comparing two-digit numbers, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is tens and ones to 99, ten more and ten less, and comparing two-digit numbers. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Nineteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 24 problems here cover four different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 9, "38 ___ 95" sits next to problems of a different kind. Place value has more question shapes than any other topic, and this format is where they meet.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "13 ___ 5", Set B's is "23 ___ 26".

How to use this worksheet

Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 1. Fold this mixed review in half, do one part of the 24 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Date the mixed review before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the place value stuck.

One mistake to watch for

The value of a digit is given as the digit itself: the 4 in 4,371 is "4". Problem 17 on this grade 1 mixed review page, "43 ___ 39", is where to look for it.

The digit is being read as a symbol rather than as a count of a unit.

Ask "four what?" every time and have the student answer with the unit — four thousands — before writing the number.
