What this worksheet covers

There are 24 place value problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "93 × 10^___ = 9,300" and "68 × 10^___ = 68,000". Common Core 5.NBT.2 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

At grade 5, place value is about decimal place value to thousandths, powers of ten, and rounding decimals, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise multiplying and dividing by powers of ten. To finish it, a student has to apply the order of operations to powers and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Three different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "93 × 10^___ = 9,300" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. A blank term in an expanded form or a missing power of ten asks the student to reason about structure, not recall a fact.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "65 × 10^___ = 650", Set B's is "12 × 10^___ = 1,200".

How to use this worksheet

Give this missing number uninterrupted. At grade 5, place value is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 24 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Mark the 24 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

The value of a digit is given as the digit itself: the 4 in 4,371 is "4". On this grade 5 missing number, problem 17 ("68 × 10^___ = 68,000") is the kind of item where it shows.

The digit is being read as a symbol rather than as a count of a unit.

Ask "four what?" every time and have the student answer with the unit — four thousands — before writing the number.
