Expressions & EquationsGrade 8Timed Drill

8.EE.3 — Scientific Notation Division Practice

Practice dividing numbers written in scientific notation to estimate very large or very small quantities and determine how many times as much one quantity is than another.

CCSSAligned to Common Core 8.EE.3: Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other.

What this worksheet covers

This is a 22-problem timed drill for grade 8 expressions and equations, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer and some operands are decimals rather than whole numbers. Problems 8 and 15, for instance, are "(9.0 x 10^-3) ÷ (3.0 x 10^2)" and "(7.2 x 10^5) ÷ (8.0 x 10^2)". The sheet sits inside Common Core 8.EE.3, in the grade 8 Expressions & Equations strand.

Skills practised

At grade 8, expressions and equations is about multi-step linear equations, operations in scientific notation and integer exponent rules, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skill on the page: scientific Notation Division Practice. To finish it, a student has to keep the decimal points aligned and apply the order of operations to powers. Twenty different answers appear across the 22 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 22; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 8, "(9.0 x 10^-3) ÷ (3.0 x 10^2)" is a typical item, is two to three minutes. Evaluating expressions and one-step equations quickly is the fluency multi-step algebra rests on.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 12 is "(2.4 x 10^7) ÷ (8.0 x 10^4)", Set B's is "(0.7 x 10^6) ÷ (1.4 x 10^6)".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 8 an expressions and equations answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 22 answers. Mark the 22 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.
