What this worksheet covers

24 integers problems fill this missing number page; problem 9 asks "-12 + ___ = -30", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, fifteen of the 24 problems involve a negative quantity and the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer. Further down, problem 17 asks "-10 × ___ = 110". The sheet sits inside Common Core 8.EE.1, in the grade 8 Expressions & Equations strand.

Skills practised

At grade 8, integers is about integer exponents, the product, quotient and power rules, negative exponents and scientific notation, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is product, quotient and power rules, multiplying and dividing integers, and adding and subtracting integers. Working the page asks a student to track direction as well as magnitude, apply the order of operations to powers, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Fourteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "-12 + ___ = -30" is one of them. A missing addend or factor with a sign is the sharpest test of whether the rules are understood rather than pattern-matched.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "10^4 × 10^___ = 10^6", Set B's is "5^5 × 5^___ = 5^9".

How to use this worksheet

Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 24 integers problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 8 skips exactly the reasoning being built. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in integers rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Adding a negative is treated as an error: -8 + 3 is answered 11 or -11. Problem 17 on this grade 8 missing number page, "-10 × ___ = 110", is where to look for it.

The rule "addition makes things bigger" held for seven years and is being defended.

Work on a number line only, with no rules, until direction is automatic; introduce the sign shortcuts afterward.
