What this worksheet covers
There are 30 ratios and proportions problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and some values are written as fractions rather than whole numbers. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "$418.00 for 11 items = $___ per item" and "228 pages in 6 days = ___ pages per day". Common Core 8.EE.5 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
The grade 8 ratios and proportions sequence covers proportional relationships and slope, solving proportions, similar figures and scale factors; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is proportional relationships and slope, solving proportions, and similar figures. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, and keep the decimal points aligned. 29 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the mixed review format
Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover five different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "$418.00 for 11 items = $___ per item" sits next to problems of a different kind. Simplifying, scaling and unit rates on the same page keep the student reading what each problem wants.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "216 miles in 6 hours = ___ miles per hour", Set B's is "A rectangle 8 cm by 6 cm is enlarged by a scale factor of…".
How to use this worksheet
Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 8 an ratios and proportions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 30 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
One mistake to watch for
Scale factors are applied to area as if to length. Problem 21 on this grade 8 mixed review page, "228 pages in 6 days = ___ pages per day", is where to look for it.
The student has not noticed that area scales by the square of the factor.
Draw the small and large rectangles and count squares; the pattern shows itself.
