What this worksheet covers

There are 24 percents problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and some operands are decimals rather than whole numbers. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "___% of 100 = 50" and "40% of ___ = 32". The sheet sits inside Common Core 7.RP.3, in the grade 7 Ratios & Proportional Relationships strand.

Skills practised

At grade 8, percents is about percent change, simple interest, and multi-step percent problems, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: percent of a number and finding the whole from a percent. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Fourteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "___% of 100 = 50" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. Blanking the percent, the whole or the part gives the same relationship three different ways.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "20% of 200 = ___", Set B's is "50% of 50 = ___".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 24 problems. At grade 8, percents rewards care over speed — a rushed missing number gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in percents rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Finding the whole from a part is done by multiplying: "30% of a number is 12" is answered 3.6. On this grade 8 missing number, problem 17 ("40% of ___ = 32") is the kind of item where it shows.

The forward procedure is being run on a reverse question.

Set it up as 30% × ___ = 12 and read it as a missing-factor problem.
