What this worksheet covers

There are 30 percents problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "A $15.00 item is 40% off. What is the sale price?" and "A value changes from 100 to 0. What is the percent decrease?". The sheet sits inside Common Core 7.RP.3, in the grade 7 Ratios & Proportional Relationships strand.

Skills practised

At grade 8, percents is about percent change, simple interest, and multi-step percent problems, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: percent increase and decrease, simple interest, and tax, tip and discount. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and carry money notation through to the answer. 28 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover four different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "A $15.00 item is 40% off. What is the sale price?" sits next to problems of a different kind. Conversions, percent-of and reverse problems on one page keep the student reading the question, not the pattern.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "Simple interest on $2000 at 3% per year for 5 years", Set B's is "Simple interest on $3000 at 2% per year for 3 years".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 8 an percents answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Ask the student to re-work one missed percents problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.

One mistake to watch for

Percent change is computed against the new value instead of the original. Problem 21 on this grade 8 mixed review page, "A value changes from 100 to 0. What is the percent decrease?", is where to look for it.

The reference quantity has not been identified.

Write "change ÷ original" above the problem every time, and label which number is the original.
