What this worksheet covers

Ten story problems fill this word problems page; problem 4 asks "A recipe uses 7 cups of flour for every 3 cups of sugar.…", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Further down, problem 7 asks "A recipe uses 6 cups of flour for every 3 cups of sugar.…".

Skills practised

The grade 8 ratios and proportions sequence covers proportional relationships and slope, solving proportions, similar figures and scale factors; this page sits inside it. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing and work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms.

About the word problems format

Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "A recipe uses 7 cups of flour for every 3 cups of sugar.…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Recipes, speeds and prices are where proportional reasoning is actually used, and where a wrong setup is obvious.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A machine finishes 2/5 of a part in 1/3 hour. What is the…", Set B's is "A pipe leaks 1 1/2 liters in 1/3 hour. What is the unit…".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 8 an ratios and proportions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the ten answers. Mark the ten problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

A proportion is cross-multiplied with the wrong pairs. Problem 7 on this grade 8 word problems page, "A recipe uses 6 cups of flour for every 3 cups of sugar.…", is where to look for it.

The setup was written with mismatched units across the equals sign.

Label every term with its unit before solving; the same unit must be on top on both sides.
