What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 8 drill sheet holds 30 ratios and proportions problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and some values are written as fractions rather than whole numbers. Two problems from the middle of the page — "If y is proportional to x and y = 12 when x = 6, what is y…" and "If y is proportional to x and y = 99 when x = 9, what is y…" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 8.EE.5 — Expressions & Equations, grade 8.

Skills practised

Grade 8 ratios and proportions means proportional relationships and slope, solving proportions, similar figures and scale factors. The skills on the page: proportional relationships and slope and solving proportions. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing and work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms. 23 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "If y is proportional to x and y = 12 when x = 6, what is y…" shows the level it holds. A run of proportions or unit rates lets the setup become mechanical so attention can move to the reasoning.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "Solve: 7/5 = x/35", Set B's is "Solve: 11/10 = 55/x".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 30 problems. At grade 8, ratios and proportions rewards care over speed — a rushed drill gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Print Set B of this ratios and proportions drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

A proportion is cross-multiplied with the wrong pairs. Problem 21 on this grade 8 drill page, "If y is proportional to x and y = 99 when x = 9, what is y…", is where to look for it.

The setup was written with mismatched units across the equals sign.

Label every term with its unit before solving; the same unit must be on top on both sides.
