What this worksheet covers
30 percents problems fill this drill page; problem 11 asks "5% of 500", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, some operands are decimals rather than whole numbers and the numbers run as high as 500. Further down, problem 21 asks "75% of 100". It is written against Common Core 6.RP.3 — Ratios & Proportional Relationships, grade 6.
Skills practised
Grade 6 percents means percent of a number, finding the percent, and finding the whole. Specifically, the problems practise percent of a number and finding what percent one number is of another. To finish it, a student has to keep the decimal points aligned. 24 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "5% of 500" shows the level it holds. Percents of a number, page after page, is how the benchmark values — 10%, 25%, 50% — become instant.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "17.5 is what percent of 25?", Set B's is "150 is what percent of 300?".
How to use this worksheet
Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an percents answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Print Set B of this percents drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
One mistake to watch for
The percent is used as a plain number: 20% of 50 is answered 1,000 or 70. Watch problem 21 of this drill — "75% of 100" — for this one.
The percent sign is being read as decoration and the "per hundred" is lost.
Rewrite every percent as a fraction over 100 or a decimal before computing, for as long as it takes to become automatic.
