What this worksheet covers
This is a 30-problem drill for grade 6 integers, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: thirteen of the 30 problems involve a negative quantity and the numbers run as high as 99. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "-44 ___ 21" and "4 ___ 46". The sheet sits inside Common Core 6.NS.7, in the grade 6 The Number System strand.
Skills practised
At grade 6, integers is about comparing and ordering integers, opposites, absolute value, and a first look at adding on a number line, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is comparing integers and absolute value. To finish it, a student has to track direction as well as magnitude and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Sixteen different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
A drill is straight practice: 30 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 11, "-44 ___ 21" is typical of the whole page. A page of one signed operation is where the sign rule stops being recited and starts being applied.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "|-56|", Set B's is "|-8|".
How to use this worksheet
Work it without a calculator. Every one of the 30 integers problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 6 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 30 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
One mistake to watch for
Absolute value is treated as "make it negative" or ignored. Problem 21 on this grade 6 drill page, "4 ___ 46", is where to look for it.
The bars are being read as parentheses.
Define absolute value as distance from zero and have the student mark that distance on a number line.
