What this worksheet covers
There are 30 percents problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. The problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "A $85.00 item is 50% off. What is the sale price?" and "30% tax is added to a $82.00 bill. What is the total?". The sheet sits inside Common Core 7.RP.3, in the grade 7 Ratios & Proportional Relationships strand.
Skills practised
At grade 7, percents is about tax, tip and discount, percent increase and decrease, and harder percents of a number, and this sheet takes one slice of that. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and carry money notation through to the answer. 29 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
A drill is straight practice: 30 problems of the same kind, laid out one to a line with working space under each — problem 11, "A $85.00 item is 50% off. What is the sale price?" is typical of the whole page. Percents of a number, page after page, is how the benchmark values — 10%, 25%, 50% — become instant.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "34% of 737", Set B's is "55% of 185".
How to use this worksheet
Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 7 an percents answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Print Set B of this percents drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
One mistake to watch for
A discount problem ends at the discount: a 25% off $60 item is "$15". Watch problem 21 of this drill — "30% tax is added to a $82.00 bill. What is the total?" — for this one.
The question asked for the sale price, and the student stopped at the first number computed.
Underline what the question is asking before starting, and check the answer is that thing.
