What this worksheet covers

This is a 30-problem drill for grade 6 division, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The numbers run as high as 72,000. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "16926 ÷ 91" and "72000 ÷ 96". Common Core 6.NS.2 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

At grade 6, division is about long division with two- and three-digit divisors and multi-digit quotients, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise long division with two-digit divisors. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can recall the division facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 30 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 11, "16926 ÷ 91" is typical of the whole page. A run of same-shaped quotients is where the steps of the algorithm stop needing to be thought about.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "65590 ÷ 70", Set B's is "31980 ÷ 52".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for 30 problems. At grade 6, division rewards care over speed — a rushed drill gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Date the drill before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the division stuck.

One mistake to watch for

A zero in the quotient is skipped: 618 ÷ 6 is answered 13. Watch problem 21 of this drill — "72000 ÷ 96" — for this one.

When a digit of the dividend is smaller than the divisor, nothing is written and the place is lost.

Have the student write a digit above every digit of the dividend, including the zero, before moving on.
