Every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Two problems from the middle of the page — "A cyclist rides 72 miles in 4 hours. At this same unit…" and "A class has 400 students and 15% of them walk to school.…" — show the range.
Skills practised
Grade 6 percents means percent of a number, finding the percent, and finding the whole. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing and carry money notation through to the answer.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "A cyclist rides 72 miles in 4 hours. At this same unit…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Sales, tips, tests and savings are the contexts percent was invented for.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A class has 12 girls and 15 boys. Write the ratio of girls…", Set B's is "A class has 20 girls and 12 boys. Write the ratio of girls…".
How to use this worksheet
Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for ten problems. At grade 6, percents rewards care over speed — a rushed word problems gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the ten problems needs a score attached to be useful.
One mistake to watch for
The percent is used as a plain number: 20% of 50 is answered 1,000 or 70. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "A class has 400 students and 15% of them walk to school.…" — for this one.
The percent sign is being read as decoration and the "per hundred" is lost.
Rewrite every percent as a fraction over 100 or a decimal before computing, for as long as it takes to become automatic.
