What this worksheet covers
This is a 24-problem missing number for grade 6 percents, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page. Problems 9 and 17, for instance, are "10% of ___ = 10" and "80% of 120 = ___". Common Core 6.RP.3 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
Grade 6 percents means percent of a number, finding the percent, and finding the whole. What a student is asked to do here is percent of a number and finding the whole from a percent. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Sixteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the missing number format
Each of the 24 problems has a blank, and the blank is not always at the end: problem 9, "10% of ___ = 10" puts it where the student has to reason backwards. Blanking the percent, the whole or the part gives the same relationship three different ways.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 13 is "___% of 60 = 15", Set B's is "___% of 300 = 210".
How to use this worksheet
Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an percents answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 24 answers. Date the missing number before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the percents stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Finding the whole from a part is done by multiplying: "30% of a number is 12" is answered 3.6. On this grade 6 missing number, problem 17 ("80% of 120 = ___") is the kind of item where it shows.
