What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 6 drill sheet holds sixteen decimals problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: operands run to three decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits and the numbers run as high as 98.271. About the drill format

This drill runs 16 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 6, "73.864 + 91.162" shows the level it holds. A run of one decimal operation is where point alignment stops being a decision and becomes a habit.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 9 is "49.188 + 83.607", Set B's is "61.611 + 95.268".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for sixteen problems. At grade 6, decimals rewards care over speed — a rushed drill gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Date the drill before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the decimals stuck.

One mistake to watch for

Decimals are aligned to the right: 3.5 + 0.42 = 3.92. Problem 11 on this grade 6 drill page, "51.291 + 73.553", is where to look for it.

The right-alignment habit from whole numbers is being applied to a notation where the point, not the right edge, fixes the value.

Write in the placeholder zero (3.50) before adding; aligning the points then aligns everything else.
