What this worksheet covers

30 multiplication problems fill this drill page; problem 11 asks "712 × 807", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 989. Further down, problem 21 asks "802 × 152". Common Core 6.NS.3 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 6 multiplication means multi-digit multiplication, greatest common factor, least common multiple and perfect squares. What a student is asked to do here is multi-digit multiplication. To finish it, a student has to recall the multiplication facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them.

About the drill format

This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "712 × 807" shows the level it holds. Thirty untimed products let a student practise the algorithm while accuracy, not speed, is the target.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "311 × 637", Set B's is "763 × 139".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an multiplication answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Print Set B of this multiplication drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

The carried digit in long multiplication is added before multiplying instead of after. Watch problem 21 of this drill — "802 × 152" — for this one.

The order of the two steps in each column has not been made explicit.

Say the two steps aloud for a few problems: multiply first, then add what was carried.
