What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 6 drill sheet holds 30 mixed operations problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, the expressions carry exponents, so the order of operations decides the answer and two of the five column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked. Two problems from the middle of the page — "(2 + 9)²" and "9 × 6²" — show the range. The sheet sits inside Common Core 6.EE.1, in the grade 6 Expressions & Equations strand.

Skills practised

At grade 6, mixed operations is about order of operations with exponents and multi-digit work in all four operations, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: order of operations with exponents and all four operations with multi-digit numbers. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit and apply the order of operations to powers. 25 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "(2 + 9)²" shows the level it holds. A drill that changes operation from problem to problem tests sign reading as much as computation.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "23 × 8", Set B's is "999 - 911".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an mixed operations answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the 30 answers. Print Set B of this mixed operations drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.

One mistake to watch for

Parentheses are treated as decoration. Problem 21 on this grade 6 drill page, "9 × 6²", is where to look for it.

Grouping symbols have been seen but not yet connected to "do this part first".

Have the student rewrite the value of the bracket above it before doing anything else.
