What this worksheet covers

There are sixteen fractions problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and the numbers run as high as 10. Problems 6 and 11, for instance, are "7/10 ÷ 1/5" and "9 ÷ 3/4". Common Core 6.NS.1 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 6 fractions means dividing fractions by fractions and all four operations with mixed numbers. Specifically, the problems practise grade 6 Dividing Fractions. Working the page asks a student to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms. Fourteen different answers appear across the sixteen problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 16 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 6, "7/10 ÷ 1/5" is typical of the whole page. A page of one fraction operation lets the renaming step become routine before anything else is layered on.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 9 is "6 ÷ 1/3", Set B's is "2 ÷ 2/3".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an fractions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the sixteen answers. Keep the key face down until all sixteen problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

Numerators and denominators are added separately: 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5. Watch problem 11 of this drill — "9 ÷ 3/4" — for this one.

The fraction is read as two whole numbers stacked, not as a count of a unit.

Use fraction strips and ask what a "fifth" would even be here; halves and thirds are different units and must be renamed before combining.
