What this worksheet covers

There are sixteen fractions problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part and the numbers run as high as 10. Problems 6 and 11, for instance, are "7/10 ÷ 1/5" and "9 ÷ 3/4". Common Core 6.NS.1 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practiced

Grade 6 fractions means dividing fractions by fractions and all four operations with mixed numbers. Specifically, the problems practice grade 6 Dividing Fractions. Working the page asks a student to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms. Fourteen different answers appear across the sixteen problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 16 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 6, "7/10 ÷ 1/5" is typical of the whole page. A page of one fraction operation lets the renaming step become routine before anything else is layered on.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original sheet; Sets B and C redraw each problem with the same shape and recomputed answers. Where Set A's problem 9 is "6 ÷ 1/3", Set B's is "2 ÷ 2/3".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 6 an fractions answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the sixteen answers. Keep the key face down until all sixteen problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totaling the score.

One mistake to watch for

Answers are left unsimplified or as improper fractions when the sheet asks for lowest terms. Watch problem 6 of this drill — "7/10 ÷ 1/5" — for this one.

Simplifying is seen as an optional extra step rather than part of the answer.

Add a checking step: is there a number that divides both parts? Is the top bigger than the bottom?
