What this worksheet covers
There are ten story problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "708 chairs are arranged in 12 equal rows. How many chairs…" and "Diego splits 570 beads evenly onto 10 bracelets. How many…".
Skills practised
At grade 6, division is about long division with two- and three-digit divisors and multi-digit quotients, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "708 chairs are arranged in 12 equal rows. How many chairs…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Sharing and grouping situations both divide, but they read differently, and recognising both is the point.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A garden has 97 boxes of plants with 9 plants in each. How…", Set B's is "A garden has 30 containers of plants with 11 plants in…".
How to use this worksheet
Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for ten problems. At grade 6, division rewards care over speed — a rushed word problems gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Date the word problems before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the division stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Two-digit divisors are estimated badly, so the trial quotient is too big and has to be redone. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "Diego splits 570 beads evenly onto 10 bracelets. How many…" — for this one.
The student is not rounding the divisor before estimating.
Round the divisor to the nearest ten, estimate against that, and expect to adjust by one.
