What this worksheet covers
This is a 10-problem word problems for grade 6 fractions, printed in black and white with the key on page two. The problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "A ribbon 8 yards long is cut into pieces 3/5 yard long. How…" and "A ribbon 3 yards long is cut into pieces 1/2 yard long. How…".
Skills practised
The grade 6 fractions sequence covers dividing fractions by fractions and all four operations with mixed numbers; this page sits inside it. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing and work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "A ribbon 8 yards long is cut into pieces 3/5 yard long. How…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Fractions of recipes, distances and shares are where the abstract unit becomes a real quantity.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A ribbon 7 yards long is cut into pieces 2/3 yard long. How…", Set B's is "Noah has 5 7/10 cups of rice and uses 1/10 cup per serving.…".
How to use this worksheet
Work it without a calculator. Every one of the ten fractions problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 6 skips exactly the reasoning being built. If more than a third of the ten problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in fractions rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Numerators and denominators are added separately: 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5. Problem 7 on this grade 6 word problems page, "A ribbon 3 yards long is cut into pieces 1/2 yard long. How…", is where to look for it.
The fraction is read as two whole numbers stacked, not as a count of a unit.
Use fraction strips and ask what a "fifth" would even be here; halves and thirds are different units and must be renamed before combining.
