What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 6 word problems sheet holds ten story problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. The problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Two problems from the middle of the page — "Two friends run laps. One completes a lap every 5 minutes,…" and "Each bus carries 4 students. How many students can 20 buses…" — show the range.
Skills practised
Grade 6 multiplication means multi-digit multiplication, greatest common factor, least common multiple and perfect squares. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing and carry money notation through to the answer.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "Two friends run laps. One completes a lap every 5 minutes,…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Equal groups, arrays and comparison situations all multiply, and recognising them is the skill the drill sheets cannot teach.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A school orders supplies in boxes of 6 or boxes of 4. What…", Set B's is "One bus leaves the station every 4 minutes and another…".
How to use this worksheet
Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for ten problems. At grade 6, multiplication rewards care over speed — a rushed word problems gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Ask the student to re-work one missed multiplication problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
One mistake to watch for
Facts are found by skip counting from zero every time. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "Each bus carries 4 students. How many students can 20 buses…" — for this one.
The table is known as a sequence, not as individual facts, so 7 × 8 means reciting eight sevens.
Drill the facts out of order and use the known-fact strategy: 7 × 8 is 7 × 4 doubled, or 5 × 8 plus 2 × 8.
