What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 5 word problems sheet holds ten story problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. Two problems from the middle of the page — "140 words are typed in 5 minutes at a steady speed. How…" and "A book of 234 pages is read in 6 equal sittings. How many…" — show the range.
Skills practised
At grade 5, division is about two-digit divisors, four-digit dividends and dividing by powers of ten, and this sheet takes one slice of that. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "140 words are typed in 5 minutes at a steady speed. How…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Sharing and grouping situations both divide, but they read differently, and recognising both is the point.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "There are 35 bags at the fair, and each one gives out 7…", Set B's is "A ribbon is cut into 23 pieces that are each 2 centimeters…".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 5 a student should take all ten division problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more division practice piles on. Keep the key face down until all ten problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
Two-digit divisors are estimated badly, so the trial quotient is too big and has to be redone. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "A book of 234 pages is read in 6 equal sittings. How many…" — for this one.
The student is not rounding the divisor before estimating.
Round the divisor to the nearest ten, estimate against that, and expect to adjust by one.
