What this worksheet covers
Ten story problems fill this word problems page; problem 4 asks "A movie theater sold tickets for $10 each. At the end of…", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Further down, problem 7 asks "A gardener plants 144 seeds in 3 rows with an equal number…".
Skills practised
Grade 6 mixed operations means order of operations with exponents and multi-digit work in all four operations. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing and carry money notation through to the answer.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "A movie theater sold tickets for $10 each. At the end of…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. The whole job in a mixed word problem is choosing the operation, which is exactly what a one-operation page never asks.

How to use this worksheet
Work it without a calculator. Every one of the ten mixed operations problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 6 skips exactly the reasoning being built. Mark the ten problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.
One mistake to watch for
Parentheses are treated as decoration. On this grade 6 word problems, problem 7 ("A gardener plants 144 seeds in 3 rows with an equal number…") is the kind of item where it shows.
Grouping symbols have been seen but not yet connected to "do this part first".
Have the student rewrite the value of the bracket above it before doing anything else.
