What this worksheet covers
There are ten story problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, six of the ten problems involve a negative quantity and the problems are written as situations that have to be translated before they can be calculated. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "Priya gets in an elevator on floor 11, goes down 15 floors,…" and "Maya's bank balance is $0. After a deposit of $270, what is…".
Skills practised
The grade 6 integers sequence covers comparing and ordering integers, opposites, absolute value, and a first look at adding on a number line; this page sits inside it. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, track direction as well as magnitude, and carry money notation through to the answer. Nine different answers appear across the ten problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the word problems format
The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "Priya gets in an elevator on floor 11, goes down 15 floors,…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Temperatures, depths, floors and balances give negative numbers a meaning that makes the direction of an answer checkable.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "The temperature was -20°C at midnight and fell 8 degrees by…", Set B's is "A diver is 96 meters below the surface and rises 4 meters.…".
How to use this worksheet
Work it without a calculator. Every one of the ten integers problems is designed to be done by hand, and reaching for a calculator at grade 6 skips exactly the reasoning being built. If more than a third of the ten problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in integers rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Ordering integers puts -8 above -3 because 8 is bigger than 3. On this grade 6 word problems, problem 7 ("Maya's bank balance is $0. After a deposit of $270, what is…") is the kind of item where it shows.
Magnitude is being compared instead of position.
Place both on a number line and read left to right; further left is always less.
