What this worksheet covers

22 division problems fill this drill page; problem 8 asks "9.45 ÷ 5", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits and the numbers run as high as 63.45. Further down, problem 15 asks "24.48 ÷ 8". Common Core 5.NBT.7 is the slot this page fills.

To finish it, a student has to keep the decimal points aligned. Nineteen different answers appear across the 22 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 22 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 8, "9.45 ÷ 5" shows the level it holds. A run of same-shaped quotients is where the steps of the algorithm stop needing to be thought about.

How to use this worksheet

By grade 5 a student should take all 22 division problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more division practice piles on. Date the drill before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the division stuck.

One mistake to watch for

A zero in the quotient is skipped: 618 ÷ 6 is answered 13. On this grade 5 drill, problem 15 ("24.48 ÷ 8") is the kind of item where it shows.

When a digit of the dividend is smaller than the divisor, nothing is written and the place is lost.

Have the student write a digit above every digit of the dividend, including the zero, before moving on.
