What this worksheet covers

24 division problems fill this missing number page; problem 9 asks "___ ÷ 3 = 18", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, the blank moves between positions from problem to problem, so no single procedure clears the page and the numbers run as high as 168. Further down, problem 17 asks "108 ÷ 6 = ___". Skills practised

At grade 4, division is about two- and three-digit dividends with one-digit divisors, with and without remainders, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skill on the page: two-digit by one-digit division. Working the page asks a student to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Eighteen different answers appear across the 24 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the missing number format

The 24 problems here move the unknown around, so a student solves for a missing part as often as for a result; problem 9, "___ ÷ 3 = 18" is one of them. Blanking the dividend or divisor turns the sheet into multiplication practice from the other side.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "36 ÷ 6 = ___", Set B's is "48 ÷ 3 = ___".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 24 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own division error teaches more than seeing it circled. If more than a third of the 24 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in division rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Division facts are found by guessing and checking with multiplication, slowly. On this grade 4 missing number, problem 17 ("108 ÷ 6 = ___") is the kind of item where it shows.

The division fact is not stored; only the multiplication fact is.

Practise each times-table row as division facts too, and pair every missing-factor problem with its division form.
